Looking for veterinary services in Albany?
Because of the shorter lifespan of our pets, we stress the importance of an annual physical examination. Thorough check-ups and preventive care can help alleviate serious health problems. We offer a wide range of veterinary services to keep your companions feeling their best:
Complete Physical Examination
Physical examinations help detect existing health problems early on or in early stages when treatment is usually more effective. Early detection and treatment of diseases of aging, such as kidney, liver, heart, thyroid, diabetes, and arthritis allows us to help make your aging pet more comfortable. Remember that since pets age much faster than humans, they need more frequent checkups.
Annual Health Exams
Annual physical examinations can help to protect your pet’s health. Comprehensive physical exams at least once a year are important throughout all stages of your pet’s life. Along with regular physical exams, other tests such as blood screening, urinalysis, ultrasound, x-rays, and other tests may be part of a comprehensive health screening.
Vaccinations are very important because they can help to prevent many serious pet diseases, such as Rabies, Canine and Feline Distemper, Canine Parvovirus, Lyme Disease, and Feline Leukemia. Some of these diseases can be deadly and can also be costly to treat. Vaccination is inexpensive protection against costly treatment or premature death. The health care team at Sand Creek Animal Hospital will carefully assess your pet’s risk factors in order to recommend appropriate vaccinations, boosters, screenings, and preventatives.
Blood-Borne Parasite Test/Heartworm Prevention
This blood test can detect Heartworm disease as well as three tick-borne diseases found in our area: Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichia. We run this test in our in-house laboratory here at Sand Creek Animal Hospital and can give you the results before you leave your appointment. We can also dispense monthly preventative medication to protect your pet from acquiring Heartworm disease; we can also dispense medications to protect your pet from ticks.
Microscopic Intestinal Parasite Examinations
Through fecal examination and testing, we can detect intestinal parasites such as: Coccidia, Giardia, Hookworm, Roundworm, Tapeworm, or Whipworm infection. Intestinal parasite tests are recommended as part of routine wellness screenings. If any of these parasites are detected, we will be able to dispense the proper medication to treat the infection. This test is very important because these parasites are zoonotic and can be transmitted to humans.
Feline Leukemia (FELV) /Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) Testing
This blood test is run in our in-house laboratory here at Sand Creek Animal Hospital and it tests to see if your cat has Feline Leukemia and/or FIV. Feline Leukemia is a form of cancer; it is a highly contagious virus that can be deadly to cats. Feline Leukemia can be prevented by vaccinating; however, cats must be tested for Leukemia before being vaccinated. You can receive the results of this test before leaving your appointment.
Sand Creek Animal Hospital laser photoWe use a state of the art laser to perform all of our surgical procedures. Benefits of laser surgery include:
1. Less Bleeding As it cuts, the laser seals small blood vessels. This drastic reduction in bleeding enables a number of surgical procedures that are not practical with conventional scalpel.
2. Less Pain The CO2 laser beam seals nerve endings and lymphatics, resulting in less edema and pain. The patient experiences a far more comfortable post-operative recovery.
3. Reduced risk of infection This is one of the unique features of the CO2 laser beam. It efficiently kills bacteria in its path, producing a sterilizing effect.
4. Quicker recovery time
We perform professional pet dental cleanings which are very important in protecting your pet’s teeth and helping to prevent severe dental problems and periodontal disease.
Sand Creek Animal Hospital digital radiology photoDigital Radiology
At Sand Creek Animal Hospital, we have a state-of-the-art digital radiology machine. Digital radiography is a form of x-ray imaging, where digital x-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Images can be produced more quickly and with less radiation than with traditional x-ray machines. Through the use of this sophisticated equipment, we are able to diagnose certain medical and surgical problems while our patients are awake or anesthetized.
Sand Creek Animal Hospital Lab/Pharmacy
We have our own laboratory on premises which gives us the ability to run complete blood counts, blood chemistry, and electrolyte analyzers. This laboratory testing is essential in the overall care of your pet because it can help our veterinarians detect certain disorders such as: kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, infections, etc. Our machines are able to produce rapid and accurate results so that patients in the hospital can begin appropriate treatment quickly. We also run pre-anesthetic bloodwork in-house prior to all surgical procedures to ensure that pets are healthy enough to go under anesthesia.
Sand Creek Animal Hospital prescription diet photoSpecialty Diets
We keep a variety of prescription and specialty pet diets in stock. We also offer the ability to order a certain prescription diet for our patients if we do not have it in stock already.
Microchipping can save the life of your pet. Each year more than 10 million pets get lost and most would not return home without identification. If your pet is microchipped, the chances of reuniting with your lost pet are increased, especially with the Home Again Recovery Program. Each microchip has a unique identification number and most veterinarians and shelters have the ability to scan lost pets for a microchip number. If the number is in the registry, then the pet owner can be contacted. A microchip is a very tiny electonic device that is implanted beneath the skin of your pet and is safe and reliable throughout the life of your pet. We can insert your pet’s microchip during a regular office visit or if your pet is under anesthesia for any surgical procedure.
Compounding and Flavoring Medications
Within our on-site pharmacy, we have the ability to provide custom compounded and flavored medications to suit your pet’s needs. The ability to compound and flavor medications is a very useful service, especially for those pets who may be difficult to medicate.
