What is “Cyclosporine Ophthalmic”?

Cyclosporine Ophthalmic ointment or solution (brand names include Optimmune or Restasis) is an eye medication used to treat keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye) in pets. It may also be used to treat superficial keratitis (ex: pannus in dogs, eosinophilic keratitis in cats).

How is “Cyclosporine Ophthalmic” given?

Cyclosporine ophthalmic is an eye ointment or drop. Typically, one dose is applied to each eye every 12 hours. But please follow exact dosing instructions as directed by your veterinarian. It often takes several weeks before the medication’s full effects are seen.

Owners should wear gloves and/ or wash hands directly after administration.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give it at the next scheduled time. Do not double-up or give extra doses.

Are there any potential side effects?

This medication may sting and cause mild eye irritation when applied. In some pets, it can also cause eyelids spasms or hair loss around the eye.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

This medication should be used with caution in pets that have a history of immune suppression or pets that are pregnant or nursing. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to cyclosporine or with viral or fungal eye infections should not take this medication. Please consult your veterinarian if you have questions about safety in your pet specifically.

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

No known drug interactions. If applying more than one eye medication, please wait at least 10 minutes between each medication.

Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.

Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?

Your veterinarian will relay follow-up recommendations for rechecking tear production and/ or eye inflammation after treatment is started.

How do I store “Cyclosporine Ophthalmic”?

Store this medication at room temperature in its original container. Make sure the cap is tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children and animals.

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
