What is “Mirtazapine”, also known as Mirataz?
Mirtazapine is a tetracyclic antidepressant with noradrenergic, antihistaminic, and specific serotonergic activity due to alpha-2-adrenergic receptor antagonism. It is used as an appetite stimulant.
How is “Mirtazapine” given?
Mirtazapine can be administered orally in dogs and orally or transdermally in cats.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
If you miss a dose, give a new dose immediately and resume prescribed dosing regiment.
Are there any potential side effects?
- Serotonin syndrome
Are there any risk factors for this medication?
- Contraindicated in patients treated with cyproheptadine, tramadol, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) as there is increased risk of serotonin syndrome; contraindicated in patients that have received MAOIs within 14 d of initiation of mirtazapine therapy.
- Reproductive and nursing safety has not been studied in dogs and cats.
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
- Avoid using Mirtazapine with SSRI’s, Tramadol, cyproheptadine
• Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.
Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?
Monitor for signs of Serotonin Syndrome.
How do I store “Mirtazapine”?
Mirtazapine should be stored between 59 and 86 degrees F. Protect from moisture and light.
What should I do in case of emergency?
If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately a href=”tel:518-446-9171″>(518-446-9171). If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
