What is “Famotidine”, also known as Pepcid?

Famotidine is an H2 Receptor antagonist used to decrease gastric acid secretion

How is “Famotidine” given?

It should be given orally as directed

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

We recommend waiting to give your pet their next dose at their next scheduled time. Please give us a call if you have any concerns and need clarification.

Are there any potential side effects?

  • H2 antagonists have a good safety profile and few adverse effects are seen at therapeutic doses
  • In people, reported adverse effects include allergic reactions, confusional states, headache or dizziness, gastric bacterial overgrowth, pancreatitis, diarrhea, decreased white blood cell counts, serum AST, ALT, and alkaline phosphatase; increases in serum bilirubin and cholestatic jaundice and increases in BUN, serum creatinine, and proteinuria

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

  • Use with caution with patients with diminished renal or hepatic function
  • Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to H2 receptor antagonists

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

  • Alteration of gastric pH by H2 receptor antagonists may alter the absorption kinetics of orally administered drugs
  • Concomitant use of oral antacids (e.g., aluminum/magnesium hydroxide) and H2 antagonists may decrease the absorption of the H2 -antagonist

• Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.

Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?

No monitoring is necessary

Keep in a tight container protected from light and moisture at room temperature

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately (518-446-9171) . If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
