What is emodepside/praziquantel?
Emodepside/praziquantel (brand name: Profender®) is a topical solution for the treatment and control of hookworm, roundworm and tapeworm infections in cats and kittens that are at least 8 weeks of age and weigh at least 2.2 lbs.
How is Profender given?
Profender topical solution is applied topically to the skin between the shoulder blades. A single treatment should be effective but if re-infection occurs it can be re-applied after 30 days.
Are there any potential side effects?
Side effects include licking/excessive grooming, scratching treatment site, salivation, lethargy, alopecia, agitation/nervousness, vomiting, diarrhea, eye irritation.
Are there any risk factors for this medication?
Profender should not be applied to cats less than 8 weeks of age or weighing less than 2.2 lbs, breeding, pregnant or lactating cats. Use with caution in debilitated cats and heartworm positive cats. Do not administer orally.
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
Drugs that can decrease praziquantel plasma concentrations include carbamazepine, corticosteroids, phenytoin, rifampin
Cimetidine can increase plasma praziquantel concentrations
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.
Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?
None.
How do I store profender?
Profener should be stored at room temperature below 77°F and protected freezing.
What should I do in case of emergency?
If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
