What is Aluminum hydroxide? Aluminum hydroxide is a phosphate binder used extra-label in a variety of veterinary species for reduction of pH of stomach fluid, prevention/treatment of NSAID-induced GI ulceration, treatment of hyperphosphatemia (high phosphorus), and is also used as an antidiarrheal.
How is Aluminum hydroxide given? It is given orally and may be mixed in food.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication? We recommend waiting to give your pet their next dose at the next scheduled time.
Are there any potential side effects? The most common adverse effect of prolonged or excessive aluminum hydroxide administration is constipation.
Are there any risk factors for this medication? Large and/or prolonged usage may cause hypophosphatemia (low phosphorus).
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of? Administration of this medication may alter the absorption of other orally administered medications.
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.
Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication? Phosphorus levels should be monitored as directed by your veterinarian.
How do I store Aluminum hydroxide? This medication is stored at room temperature.
What should I do in case of emergency?
If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office (518-446-9171) immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
