What is Amantadine?
Amantadine Amantadine is an antiviral, analgesic, and antiparkinsonian (NMDA antagonist) drug used in dogs, cats, and horses for prophylaxis and treatment of infection caused by various strains of influenza A virus, and for adjunctive management of chronic pain.
How is Amantadine given?
Amantadine is a tablet or capsule given orally.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
If you miss a dose, give it when you remember, but if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give it at the next scheduled time, and return to the regular dosing schedule. Never give your pet two doses at once or give extra doses.
Are there any potential side effects?
Side effects include allergic reaction, nausea, vomiting, intestinal gas, ataxia.
Are there any risk factors for this medication?
Amantadine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to amantadine. Excreted via kidneys: dose should be reduced in the face of renal dysfunction. Use with caution in patients with seizure disorders and patients on other medications that lower seizure threshold. Avoid use during pregnancy and lactation.
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
Coadministration with central nervous system stimulants may results in excessive stimulation. Anticholinergic side effects may be potentiated when used concurrently with other drugs with anticholinergic properties. Drugs that inhibit renal tubular secretion (e.g., trimethoprim) may increase serum amantadine levels and increase risk of adverse effects.
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.
Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?
Monitor for response to therapy. Reassess if improvement is not seen. Monitor closely when co-administered with drugs that might cause CNS stimulation.
How do I store Amantadine?
Amantadine should be stored at room temperature between 68-77°F.
What should I do in case of emergency?
If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
