Budesonide

What is “Budesonide”?

“Budesonide is a hormone, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressant drug used in dogs and cats as an anti-inflammatory, especially in GI disease, as well as for treatment of asthma in cats.”

How is “Budesonide” given?

It should be given orally as directed

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

We recommend waiting to give your pet their next dose at their next scheduled time. Please give us a call if you have any concerns and need clarification.

Are there any potential side effects?

Monitor for side effects such as urinating or drinking more than usual, black/tarry stools, weight gain, a urinary tract infection, or elevation in liver enzymes

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

Caution should be used in patients who have pre-existing heart disease, diabetes, seizure disorders, liver dysfunction, high blood pressure, Cushing’s disease, have a current corneal ulcer, have been diagnosed with glaucoma, or are pregnant.

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

This medication should NOT be given with any non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) as it could increase the risk of GI irritation/ulceration

Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.

Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?

Yes. Your pet will need to have bloodwork evaluated every 6 months to make sure their blood sugar levels are normal as well as their kidney and liver function.

How do I store “Budesonide”?

Keep container tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately (518-446-9171). If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
