What is “Dorzolamide/Timolol Ophthalmic Solution”?
Dorzolamide/Timolol ophthalmic solution (brand name Cosopt) is an eye medication used to treat glaucoma (increased eye pressure).The medication decreases fluid production within the eye to decrease eye pressure. In cases where glaucoma is present in one eye, it can also be used on the other eye to help prevent glaucoma development.
How is “Dorzolamide/Timolol” given?
Dorzolamide/Timolol is an eye drop. Typically, 1 drop is applied to each eye every 8-12 hours. But please follow exact dosing instructions as directed by your veterinarian.
Owners should wear gloves and/ or wash hands directly after administration
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give it at the next scheduled time. Do not double-up or give extra doses.
Are there any potential side effects?
This medication may sting and cause mild eye irritation when applied. In some pets, changes in heart rhythm and blood pressure may occur. Rarely we can see dizziness, nausea, or vomiting as a side-effect.
Are there any risk factors for this medication?
If your pet has a history of significant heart, respiratory, liver, or kidney disease, then this medication may be contraindicated. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to dorzolamide or timolol should not take this medication. Please consult your veterinarian if you have questions about safety in your pet specifically
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
This medication is typically not recommended if your pet is on other carbonic anhydrase inhibitor or beta blocker medication. Please consult your veterinarian to determine if it is safe to give in your pet specifically.
If applying more than one eye medication, please wait at least 10 minutes between each medication.
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.
Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?
Your veterinarian will recommend follow-up recommendations for rechecking eye pressure after treatment is started.
How do I store “Dorzolamide/Timolol”?
Store this medication at room temperature in its original container. Make sure the cap is tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
What should I do in case of emergency?
If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
