What is Levetiracetam?
Levetiracetam can be used alone or in combination with other seizure control medications. It is usually given with other seizure control medications to boost their effectiveness. Levetiracetam is also used to allow for reduced dosing of other seizure medications to mitigate side effects.
How is Levetiracetam given?
Levetiracetam is given orally.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
If a dose is missed, give it as soon as you can. If it is time already for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the normal schedule. Do not give two doses at the same time.
Are there any potential side effects?
There is little potential for side effects. All seizure control medications can cause drowsiness, and, in fact, this is the main side effect in dogs (and it is usually temporary). In cats, temporary appetite reduction and listlessness are most common. Some cats will drool.
Are there any risk factors for this medication?
There are not any risk factors or contraindications to the administration of Levetiracetam.
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
There are minimal drug interactions. When given with other seizure control medication, there is an increased potential for transient drowsiness.
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.
Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?
Depending on your pet’s medication condition and other drugs being administered, monitoring of CBC, biochemistry profile, urinalysis, and bile acids every 6 months may be recommended.
How do I store Levetiracetam?
Levetiracetam should be stored at room temperature.
What should I do in case of an emergency?
If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions to contact an emergency facility.
