What is “Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic”?

How is “Budesonide” given?

It should be administered onto the directed eye(s) at the directed frequency, most commonly twice daily. It should be used topically only; not for injections.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

We recommend waiting to give your pet their next dose at their next scheduled time. Please give us a call if you have any concerns and need clarification.

Are there any potential side effects?

“It can potentially cause elevation of intraocular pressure, posterior subcapsular cataracts, delayed wound healing, development of secondary ocular infection (bacterial, fungal, viral), eye pain, foreign body sensation, burning/stinging on administration, blurry vision.”

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

  • “None specifically mentioned for ophthalmic formulations; long-term or frequent ophthalmic use may predispose to the following drug interactions reported with systemic corticosteroids.”
  • “Interactions reported in animals include:
    • NSAIDs, aspirin increase risk of GI irritation/ulceration/perforation
    • Vaccination of animals given immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids is not recommended.”

How do I store “Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic”?

  • Ointment: Store at room temperature
  • Solution/suspension: protect from freezing, store up to 77F; store vials in upright position

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately 518-446-9171. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
